Bio
Helppi Smith is a Dominican bassist, music producer, arranger, music director, and multi-instrumentalist based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Known for his versatility, strong musical instinct, and distinctive approach to groove and tone, he has built a career that moves seamlessly between live performance, touring, recording, arranging, and music production.Raised in the Christian faith, music became an essential part of Helppi’s life from an early age.
His curiosity led him to explore multiple instruments before choosing the electric bass as his primary voice at the age of 15. That multi-instrumental foundation would later become an important part of his development as a producer and arranger, giving him a broader perspective on music beyond the role of a bassist.
Throughout his career, Helppi has performed, recorded, and collaborated with artists across a wide range of genres and musical scenes. His credits include Chichi Peralta, Alex Ubago, Shadow Blow, Letón Pé, Gabriel Pagán, Covi Quintana, Pavel Núñez, Mark B, Denicher Pol, Danny Berrios, Aline Barros, Rubinsky, Aura Estrella, Gadiel Espinosa, Ire Pelusa, SEYE, Diego Jaar, Snenie, among others.
His work has taken him to stages and projects throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe, establishing him as a versatile musician equally comfortable in Pop, R&B, Gospel, Funk, Latin, Urban, Alternative, and contemporary music settings.
Beyond performing, Helppi works as a music director, producer, and arranger, bringing together his experience on stage and in the studio to develop live shows, musical arrangements, playback systems, and creative productions for artists and touring projects.
His creative background also extends beyond music. Helppi has worked in film as a gaffer with Black Letter Films, contributing to productions that received international recognition at festivals including the Madrid International Film Festival and the Nice International Film Festival. In 2021, he released his debut album, Ghastly, a project that expanded into film through a short film of the same name.
Helppi is also a member of The Recording Academy and a Voting Member of The Latin Recording Academy, reflecting his continued involvement in the professional music community both in the Dominican Republic and internationally.
At the center of everything he does is a simple philosophy: serve the music. Whether performing on stage, recording bass, directing a live show, or producing in the studio, Helppi brings together groove, precision, creativity, and a deep respect for the song.
